Congratulations on your graduation! ... Now it's time to enter the workforce. Here are some tips on finding your first post-education job:

  1. Revise your resume
Your resume while you were a student should not be the same resume that you use for your first post-education position. If your resume is lacking in relevant experience be sure to draw attention to the skills that you have that match or exceed the requirements for the position you are applying to. Be sure to have other people review your resume for grammar and spelling. Don't be afraid to reach out for professional help creating your resume.

  2. Network
You have friends, family and other students who are leaving school in the same situation as you. Be sure to stay in touch with all of these people and keep them in the loop of your job search. Some of the best employment opportunities become available through networking with people in your social circle. Be sure to utilize the online tools at your disposal such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to stay in touch with your social circle and to look for employment opportunities. Don't forget about in-person networking, this can be some of the most valuable time. Look out for job fairs, and industry events that you could attend to meet other people who may be able to assist you in your job search.

  3. Research
Research the companies that you are interested in and reach out to them about potential employment opportunities. You can use the research you have to customize your resume for a specific company, position and/or interview. Companies want people who are driven to work not only for the position itself, but the organization. Understanding an organization, their industry and competition, and organizational culture can help you to stand out.

  4. Apply
Your can't get the job if you don't apply for it. Set goals and create a schedule for yourself and balance your time between networking, research, new applications and updating your skills. A new job starts first with a job application.

  5. Practice your interviewing skills
When leaving school you have likely never had a professional interview. Run through some interview scenarios with your friends and family to familiarize yourself with the situation. Look online at common interview questions and review your resume to be sure that you know everything that you have contained on it. Always dress professionally and be aware of the importance of first impressions.

  6. Follow up
After an interview be sure to follow up with a thank-you email. This can briefly summarize your appreciation and layout a timetable for future communication. This also allows you to stand out from the crowd of other applicants and interviewees.

  7. Use your time wisely
While job hunting can sometimes be a long-term process don't just sit around and wait for a job to come to you. Keep your spirits up and keep applying. Keep your skills and knowledge up to date. Volunteer and get out and keep networking.
